4 in 10 Belgian employees are unhappy with their salary

20.06.2019

While people in the public sector are the happiest with what they earn, Belgian employees in telecommunications, hotel, gastronomy & catering seem to be the least happy. A StepStone study shows some interesting details – based on our recently launched Salary Planner:

  • Only 58% of Belgian employees are satisfied with their salary
  • People in the education sector are 24% more satisfied with their salary than the average employee
  • More pay rises mean a happier employee

Employees in the public sector are the most satisfied with their salary

People in the public sector like education, civil service and science tend to be more satisfied with their current salary than the average Belgian employee.

While one of the possible explanations for this are fixed salary scales, we could assume that in the private sector, negotiations, pro-active requests of pay rises plus not knowing the salary of colleagues might give uncertain feelings about salary and thus less satisfaction.

Belgian employees in the HORECA, Leisure and Telecommunications industries are the least happy with their salary.

More pay rises mean a happier employee

Perhaps expectedly, the more an employee receives a salary increase, the happier the employee tends to be. We should also keep in mind that elements leading to salary increases such as good performance and recognition of this performance by management, are also correlated to employee’s satisfaction.

People who received more than 4 pay rises in their career, are 42% happier than those who never received a rise and for people receiving more than 9 pay rises throughout their career, this rises to 54% happier.

Getting started with the Salary Planner

Starting today, StepStone allows Belgian employees to see how their salary changes when their professional situation changes. StepStone’s new Salary Planner is an interactive tool that won’t only show your salary compared to others but will let you know which factors you can influence to change your current salary.

Methodology

This study was based on the results of StepStone’s Salary Planner with thousands of datasets available. For more information, we gladly refer you to our dedicated page.

The figures represent the share of people in a particular category who are satisfied with their salary.

We gladly add some clarifying examples. For the industry chart (#1), for instance, 72% of all education and training respondents are (very) happy with their salary (and 28% are not). In chart 2, of the people who have received 10 or more pay rises, 77% are happy with his salary (and 23% are not).
