In the 1980s, Rudy Tops' passion for food and technology was the breeding ground for the invention of a unique way to sterilise single portion meals, using a new microwave technology. His company, Tops Foods NV, founded in 1993 in Belgium, was the first company ever to employ this microwave
technology for sterilization of ready meals in the food processing industry. Production began in 1996 and the proprietary microwave technology was patented across the world in 2002.
