ENGINEERS & EXPERTS

Bel V is a subsidiary of the FANC (Federal Agency for Nuclear Control) and has since 14 April 2008 taken over the regulatory controls in nuclear installations formerly carried out by the Authorized Inspection Organization AVN. The FANC is the competent authority in the field of nuclear applications. It relies on the technical expertise of its subsidiary Bel V for carrying out inspections in nuclear power plants and other nuclear installations in Belgium (hospitals, universities, radiological installations,…).

Bel V :

  • acts as expert for the safety assessments of nuclear projects
  • participates actively in meetings and working groups that are organized in the framework of international organizations (EC – OECD – IAEA)
  • exchanges information and experience feedback with Belgian and foreign colleagues
  • contributes to the emergency plans called in for nuclear accidents

for immediate recruitment (m/w) :

in nuclear safety assessments & nuclear inspections

Several jobs are vacant, with the following profiles:

RSA-CR Safety Analyst – Cranes and lifting devices.

Main task : work in team on the safety evaluations of handling and lifting devices used in nuclear installations. It concerns more specifically tools for load handling in nuclear power plants or other nuclear installations (industry, storage or research) the failure of which could have serious consequences for the safety of the installation. The job requires a lot of evaluation and synthesis skills. Experience in safety analysis of lifting devices is considered an advantage, as well as transferable knowledge in the field of design or dimensioning of handling and lifting devices.

RI-NI1 Inspector of nuclear installations (class 1).

Main task : perform inspections in the installations and make the necessary investigations in order to form an opinion on the ability of the licensee to ensure a sufficient nuclear and radiological safety level; supervise the follow-up of actions resulting from the inspection reports and the modifications to the installations; make sure to establish a scrupulous and constructive dialogue with the licensee.

RSA-REX Safety Analyst – Experience feedback.

Main task: analysis of events in Belgian and foreign nuclear installations, with a view to draw the necessary lessons for improving the nuclear safety and radiation protection in the Belgian nuclear installations. This analysis is carried out in consultation with the experts that carry out the surveillance of the Belgian installations. Both deterministic and probabilistic approaches are to be taken into account. Participation in international conferences is part of the job.

RSA-WM Safety Analyst –Radioactive waste management.

Main task: work in team on the safety evaluation of radioactive waste management and more specifically radioactive waste storage. Activities can concern Belgian as well as international projects (support to organizations abroad, participation in international R&D projects,…). You are also prepared to cooperate in other tasks within Bel V, related to the safety evaluation of nuclear installations (power plants or other installations).

RSA-MEC Safety Analyst – Mechanics.

Main task: work in team on the safety evaluation of major nuclear installations in the mechanical field. This job includes a.o. the evaluation of safety studies in the framework of national and international projects and support to inspection activities. To this end, techniques of structural analysis, thermal-hydraulics and fracture mechanics have to be applied. The evaluation of in-service inspections of the major mechanical components of a nuclear power plant (reactor vessel, steam generators, pressurizer), as well as projects related to ageing of installations in the field of mechanics are also part of the job.

RSA-VE Safety Analyst – Ventilation systems.

Main task : evaluation of the safety level of systems important to safety of nuclear installations, especially ventilation systems. This includes the study and supervision of modification proposals, as well as the assessment of studies in the framework of safety re-assessments. This activity is performed in synergism with other disciplines such as fire protection, electrical systems and instrumentation & control systems.

RSA-SY Safety Analyst – Fluidum systems.

Main task : evaluation of the safety level of systems important to safety of nuclear installations, especially emergency and heat removal systems. This includes the study and supervision of modification proposals, as well as the assessment of studies in the framework of safety re-assessments. This activity is performed in synergism with other disciplines such as thermal-hydraulics, mechanics, electrical systems and instrumentation & control systems.

RSA-SAM Safety Analyst – Severe accident management.

Main task: evaluation of studies and measures concerning severe accidents in nuclear power plants, both for the development of accident scenarios and for the radiological consequences in case of a severe accident. The evaluation of probabilistic safety assessments of Level 2 (release to the environment) is also part of the job. You can also be involved in more specific areas such as the analysis of safety systems.

RSA-DE Safety Analyst – Decontamination and decommissioning.

Main task : evaluation of safety related aspects of decontamination and decommissioning of nuclear installations. This includes the study and supervision of modification proposals, as well as the assessment of dismantling safety studies. These activities are performed in synergism with other disciplines such as ventilation, radiation protection, waste management, clearance, … They also have to be performed in collaboration with inspectors of the nuclear installations. Experience or good knowledge of operational radiation protection is an asset.

RSA-SAR Safety Analyst – Severe accident research.

Main task: participation in Bel V R&D activities for severe accidents in nuclear power plants. These activities include the realisation of studies with the use of computer programmes for the simulation of severe accidents (severe accident codes) as well as the follow-up of international R&D projects (OECD, IAEA,…) in which Bel V participates. Experience with severe accident codes is an asset. Besides these R&D activities, you may be involved in probabilistic safety analyses Level 2 (PSA Level 2) and the analysis of dossiers on severe accidents in nuclear power plants.

These varied jobs are performed in the heart of the nuclear sector. With a view to a multidisciplinary approach for maintenance and development of the expertise, you will also participate, in collaboration with your colleagues, in other studies and specific projects (periodical safety reviews, various safety analyses, waste disposal, calculations of shielding, modifications to the installations,…), within specific “competency centres” inside

Bel V as well as on the international level.

A considerable part of the engineers’ time is dedicated to specific training programmes and other external activities, with a view to developing and maintaining the competency (international conferences, working groups, expertise abroad,…).
